Skeleton Keys

As the air gets crisp and Halloween draws near, there’s something undeniably spooky and fascinating about old locks and skeleton keys. These antique keys date back to the 19th century and were once used to open everything from doors and cabinets to secret compartments. Popularly named for their simple, stripped-down design, skeleton keys (technically called bit and barrel keys) were cleverly made to open multiple locks of the same type, adding a touch of mystery to their function.

Not only are skeleton keys fascinating, but they operate on entirely different mechanical principles from modern pin tumbler locks. They require a different knowledge and skillset to service than contemporary lock cylinders.

At A+ Safe & Lock, bringing old-world charm back to life is something we love doing. Whether you’re restoring a vintage piece or just curious about the keys of the past, we can help identify and cut keys to match.

This Halloween, let’s unlock a little history—no ghost stories required.
